Short of Space at Your New Home? Why an External Shipping Container Could be Ideal

You've recently fulfilled your dream of moving to Australia and have recently arrived at your host city, complete with all your worldly possessions. You've decided to move into a place that is close to your intended place of work, but it has a relatively compact plot of land, and the house is not the largest in terms of space. As you get over your jetlag, you may be scratching your head as you work out what you're going to do with all of your stuff and where you are going to put it. If you think creatively, then you might be able to make use of the shipping container that transported all your belongings across the ocean. How could this container serve as a storage unit?

Squeezing It in

Hopefully, you will have a sensible amount of space in your garden, which should be accessible from the main road. If so, purchase the shipping container from the business in question and get it shipped to the address. With a bit of ingenuity and some help from a crane, you can place it at the back of your house.

How to Get Creative

Once you have sorted everything out and moved whatever is critical inside the home, you can then get to work and convert the container for your storage use. You'll find it is ideal and purpose-made for this job, as it is equipped with special rings all the way down each side at specific heights. You'll be able to add brackets and put shelves in place that will give you full-length storage options each side of the container.

If you've got room to spare, then you can even set up an office at the bottom end. You can run data lines and electrical feed into the container and then add power outlets and lighting strips. Once you've done that, you can move the appropriate furniture in for your workspace.

You may want to introduce interior panelling, which you can get made quite cheaply, and then mount some lighting receptacles to this wall. If you want to be even more adventurous, put some solar panels on the roof and use these to power LED lighting within.

While you are on the roof, see how easy it would be to introduce some skylights so that you can get some natural light inside as you are working away. Finally, you will want to add some flooring underfoot—you could consider the type of lining that Australians regularly fit to their pickup trucks. Don't forget to address any waterproofing issues that you may have so everything is protected from the elements in the future.

Working Away

Have a word with the agency to buy the container, figure out how you're going to get it to your property and you should be all ready to go. Contact a company that offers shipping containers for sale to learn more.
